Air Filter Working Principle

Jul 29,2026

Air purification filters are core components for air handling systems and clean room environments. They deliver clean ambient air, improve end product quality, and are widely adopted in dust free workshops and air supply systems across electronics, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, laboratory, refrigeration and other industries.

Want to learn how air filters work? Air filtration relies on five core mechanisms: interception, inertia, diffusion, gravity sedimentation, and electrostatic attraction. Detailed explanations are as follows:

1. Interception Effect

The filter medium features intricately arranged fibres that form numerous mesh grids. When airborne particles travel along airflow streamlines close to fibre surfaces: if the distance from the particle centre streamline to a fibre surface equals or is smaller than the particle radius, particles will be trapped and deposited onto fibres. The sieve effect falls under the interception mechanism.

2. Inertial Impaction

As airflow flows through the fibre bed, complex fibre layouts force airflow streamlines to make sharp, frequent turns. Heavy mass or high velocity particles possess strong inertia and cannot follow sharply deflected airflow streamlines. Particles deviate from streamlines, move toward fibres, and collide for deposition. Where inertial motion brings particles into the interception zone, inertial force works together with interception to capture contaminants.

3. Diffusion Effect

Gas molecule thermal collision triggers Brownian motion of fine particles. Smaller particles exhibit more obvious Brownian movement. At room temperature, fine particles vibrate over distances several  to dozen times larger than fibre spacing, greatly increasing their probability of contacting and adhering to fibre surfaces. For particles larger than 0.3 μm, Brownian motion weakens significantly; diffusion alone rarely drives these particles out of airflow streamlines to hit filter fibres.

4. Gravity Sedimentation

Particles deviate from airflow streamlines under gravitational force and settle onto filter fibres. However, air residence time inside fibre based filters (especially filter paper filters) is far shorter than 1 second. For particles smaller than 0.5 μm, gravity driven settling cannot complete before particles pass through the filter medium, so gravity sedimentation can be practically neglected.

5. Electrostatic Attraction

Fibres and airborne particles may carry electric charges from multiple sources. Resulting electrostatic force attracts and captures incoming particles.
